Massage

Massage parlours in SG are roughly classified into three categories - small shops, established chains, and spas.

Small shops

The small shops are usually dimly lit to create a relaxed mood but it is usually quite cramped. The chairs are tightly placed to maximize space. On weekends, the place can be quite packed with customers thus you have to be patient for your turn. You can also get a body massage behind a curtain off area or an unlocked room. Many of the masseurs without uniforms are freelancers. They have an earpiece and their phones frequently ring during peak hours to summon them to the next busiest shop. So don't be surprised to see the same masseur working at different shops. Prices range from $20 for a foot massage to $45 for a body massage.

I prefer the small shops as they can provide good massage at the lowest price. Their chairs are also quite comfortable. It is quite relaxing sitting in the dimly-lit room while someone massages your feet. But for body massage, the experience is not as good. You just lie on a bed in a small sparsely decorated room, or a partitioned room separated by curtains.

You can check out these places:

Established chains

The established chains will boast a better decorated environment and not as cramped. The masseurs are supposed to be trained under the same school and certified professional, and they do not free float to other shops. Thus quality control can be better managed and you can always call in advance to book your favourite masseur. Of course, these places charge a higher price. The rate is $10 to $20 higher than small shops. They are usually found in shopping centres, but rarely in the residential areas.

Spas

If ambience and more exotic massage is what you are looking for, visit a spa. You will get a luxurious setting with facilities such as Jacuzzi, Sauna and TV lounge, with nice scent abound. Exotic massages such as the Swedish massage, Javanese massage, Aromatherapy massage, Tension release massage, etc, are available. There is also an attendant catering to your every need and request. Prices are from $60 to $ 100++, usually the range is above $100 for basic massage and above $150 for more exotic massage.

“Special service”

Not all small shops and spas actually want to provide good massage. Some focus more on “special services”, so get your requirements right. These massage parlours offer massages coupled with some special services of interesting “sort”.

Massage price starts from $28, and for special service, the charges range from $40 for basic service, to $100 for full service.

These are the tell-tale signs for small shops that provide special service:

Ø They are usually fronted by scantily clad China girls trying to seduce you to come in
Ø No male masseurs
Ø Lack of female customers in the shop
Ø No chairs for foot massage
Ø Advertisements boasting of young and beautiful masseuses

For health spas, it is harder to tell, but here are some possible signs to look out for:

Ø No male masseurs
Ø Lack of female customers in the shop
Ø Advertisements focusing on young and beautiful masseuses
Ø Massage prices are much cheaper than other spas

There are plenty of advertisements for massage parlours in the “The New Paper”, so get a copy from the news stands for some guidance.
